What the generator builds

llms.txt is a proposed convention, described at llmstxt.org, for a Markdown file at the root of a site that tells language models what the site is and which pages matter. This tool drafts one from your public pages:

  • The name, from your Open Graph site name or page title, and a one-line summary from your meta description, or written by a model from your homepage copy when there is capacity.
  • Links from your homepage and from sitemap.xml (or the sitemap your robots.txt names), grouped into Docs, Product, Pages, Blog and Company.
  • Titles and descriptions read from up to twelve of those pages. Legal and changelog pages go under Optional, the section the convention reserves for material a reader can skip.

Why have an llms.txt at all

No major answer engine has committed to reading llms.txt, so treat it as cheap insurance rather than a ranking factor. What it does reliably is give any agent or tool that fetches it a short, accurate description of your site in your own words, instead of whatever it infers from your markup.

What it cannot do

It is a draft. A meta description written for a search snippet is often not the sentence you want a model to quote, and the grouping is by URL pattern, so read every section.

It reads at most twelve pages in full and lists up to thirty links. A large site will need its list trimmed or extended by hand.

Pages marked noindex are left out, and it only follows links on your own domain.

What is llms.txt?

A plain Markdown file served at /llms.txt that describes a website for language models: its name, a one-line summary, and links to the pages that matter, each with a short description. The format is described at llmstxt.org.

Where do I put the file?

At the root of your site, so it is served at yoursite.com/llms.txt. In a Next.js, Vite or Astro project that usually means the public folder.

Does llms.txt help SEO?

Not directly. Search engines do not rank on it, and support among AI crawlers is inconsistent. It is worth having because it is quick to write and it is the one place where you decide how your site is summarised.

Is the summary written by AI?

Sometimes. When there is model capacity it writes the summary line from your homepage copy, and the result says so. Otherwise it uses your meta description. Everything else comes straight from your own pages.
